A warm welcome to the Wealden Model Aircraft Society

The club was formed over 30 years ago and flies in the Wealden area. The flying sites are local for Crowborough, Uckfield, Heathfield, Tunbridge Wells, and now Polegate and Lewes residents so get in touch - all local and further afield are welcome!

We hold meetings on the 1st Tuesday of the month at 8pm. In the Summer we move these meetings to the flying fields so that we can enjoy the great weather at 7pm! All meetings are held at the Five Ash Down Village Hall and we usually arrange activities and speakers and encourage all to bring their models to show to other members.

We fly fixed wing radio controlled (RC) model aircraft - (aeroplanes / airplanes) and helicopters at our flying sites.

Wealden Warbirds

By Bob Hart

The Warbirds meeting went off very well. We counted 35 people, pilots and spectators, there around mid morning. We sold out on the BBQ which covered it's costs. The prizes, bottles of wine, for various achievements, were awarded to visitors Chris Searl, Steve Taylor and our own Bob Noble. Well done to them. Rod Palmer came and took some pics and we hope to put them on the website in due course. Thanks to all who supported this meeting.

Sad News

Chris Pilbeam, a long time member of the club, sadly passed away following debilitating illness. Apart from his flying he will be remembered as a dab hand with the BBQ. He will be sadly missed. Details of the funeral will be announced as soon we know the them.

Easy Starting at Rotherfield

Jim Tucker has kindly made and installed a Starter table at our Rotherfield site. The starter table raises your model off the ground so no more kneeling down or bending over your model to get it started. Much safer and kinder on your back! Well done and thanks to Jim

Club Nights from April

Club nights now move outdoors to enjoy the Spring! Our meetings will now take place at the Rotherfield Flying site until the Autumn. We meet at an earlier time of 7pm but feel free to get to the site as early as you can - work permitting. Official start time is 7pm but to make use of the sun you might want to get there earlier!

Winter Projects Club Night

The "bring your winter project" evening at the February club night meeting was very well attended. Lots of models to see from Vintage three channel through to a slope soaring Hawker Hunter, aerobatic aircraft, scale warbirds and turbine power. Please checkout the gallery for pictures or click the image on the right of this page.

Indoor Flying now finished until the Autumn

Berwick BBQ 8th September

Come and join us at the Berwick site for our annual BBQ on Sunday 8th September 2013. Bring your planes and have some great BBQ food. Please see the Club Nights page for more details - see you all there!

Penhurst Tree Issues

The large tree near the gate into the field where the strip is located has shed some more boughs. Not as big as before but enough to damage parked cars and humans under it. It might be best to avoid it until it is fixed.

Berwick Update

The new runway at Berwick has now been completed so we have 2 runways at 90 degrees to each other for great landing options. The 2nd runway in line with the prevailing wind so come on down and give it a try!

Funfly Competition CANCELLED

It is with regret that the Funfly competition scheduled for Sunday 16th June 2013 will not go ahead. There has been a lack of interest and hence entrants for the competition so the committee had no choice but to cancel. For other evens please checkout the Wealden Warbirds even below.

Fly In - Wealden Warbirds

A year goes very quickly and its nearly time for the 2nd Annual Wealden Warbirds Fly in. Last year was a great success and now that we have 2 runways we expect this year to be even better. Look forward to seeing you there on the 14th July 2013.

Do you know when to close the Berwick Gate?

Well here it is from the farmer: Monday to Friday, if the gate is unlocked when you arrive please leave it open, at the weekend even if the gate was open when you arrived please ensure it is closed and locked when you leave, thanks all..

Sites Update

After the terribly long winter the fields are getting prepared for the season. See below for field updates as of 28th April 2013.

Penshurst

Has been prepared and is fit for flying. The strip was damaged by a hunt over the winter but has now been repaired and is in good order. The access to the strip will also be repaired in the future to reduce the amount of holes and dips. The gate to the field has also been repaired.

Rotherfield

Has now had its first cut cut and had some light rolling. It now needs another cut and roll for small aircraft to take off easily but is looking much better and is pretty much ready for the season.

Berwick

The main strip has now been reduced and cut and preparation of the new cross runway has been started.

Access to the strip is OK with care and some hardcore has been put down in a couple of places and needs care going over it at the moment.

Here are some pictures showing the new runway that was being worked on over the weekend of 27th / 28th April. If the weather gives us good growing conditions  we should be able to start using this within 2 to 3 weeks.
....no excuses about crosswinds now!

Tony Nijhuis comes to WealdenFlyers

Tony is well known in our model world for his excellent scale plans and huge scale plan builds. Tony has agreed to come to our April club night and give us a talk on this subject. Come along for a great night.

Parking at our flying Sites during wet weather (11th Nov 2012)

Please note that ALL Fields - Berwick / Rotherfield and Penshurst are pretty wet at the moment. The drives leading up to the fields at Penshurst and Berwick are extremely wet and therefore please park on the hardstandings and don't drive to the fields. Also in Rotherfield please park in the yard before the field. If you try to drive into any of the sites you will get stuck and we will have some angry land owners!

Sad News - Terry Payne

Terry Payne, a long time member of the club, passed away following a relatively short illness on Friday 14th. Dec. Terry's wife, Julie, has told us that the funeral will take place at the Eastbourne crematorium in the main chapel at 11.30 on the 3rd Jan. 2013. There will be a floral tribute arranged on behalf of the club and any of the members who wish to go will be welcome at the service. Our thoughts and best wishes are with Julie at this time.

Indoor Flying Competition 2012

We are holding a small fun competition on Sunday 16th December during our indoor flying session starting at 2.30pm. Join in or come along and watch. We will have events for shock flyers / helicopters and slow flyers such as spot landing / touch and goes etc. Should be a good laugh!!

Berwick Noise Issue and Overflying

We have had a complaint about aircraft noise and overflying at the Berwick site. This originated from the occupant of the house over the hill to the left end (west) of the strip. Please ensure that you fly considerately and avoid flying to too far over the hill to the left hand side of the field (approx 10 o'clock as you stand in the pilots box).

Therefore please treat the hedgerow at the top of the hill to the left (west) end of the strip as the absolute limit of flight and fly well within this boundary. A map showing the ‘no-fly zone’ on the club website in due course.

Wealden Warbirds.... What a day! 2012

The 1st Wealden Warbirds was a great success thanks to all that organised the event and of course those that attended and put on a great flying display despite the wind. Well done all!

This will become an annual event for the club. - Don't forget that the Scale Day is just around the corner at the same Berwick site.

WealdenFlyers Scale Day 19th August 2012

The annual Scale Day is nearly here! We have dropped the price for the BBQ to just £5 per person so this is a bargain. Please note that you should contact a committee member of the club to enroll. Please contact us if you would like to BOOK In.

Club Nights July and August 2012

To enjoy the glorious UK Summer these club meetings will take place at the Rotherfield Site for the next couple of months. If the weather does turn out to be extremely windy or if it rains then the club meeting will be at the usual venue of the Five Ash Down Village Hall.

Penshurst Update: 2012

The recent issues at the site have been resolved. Please see the Penshurst Site page for more details.

A little reminder!

If you are last to leave the Rotherfield flying site please make sure you put the windsock just inside the right hand door of the green barn and also shut the gate (which applies to all fields). There are also some chairs in this barn which anyone is free to use.

Club Sunday - starts 4th March 2012

The 1st Club Sunday is at Rotherfield on 4th March 2012.

Come along and meet your fellow flyers. In April we will meet at Berwick and Penshurst will be in May. We will then rotate! Check the left hand pane on this page to see where we are flying next. For more details see the events page.

Checkout new pictures in the Gallery.

Introducing - Club Sunday!

The club is getting bigger with more fields and members. This is fantastic and great for members as they can fly everyday from 3-4 sites but how do you make flying more sociable?

We have come up with a plan!

We want old and new members to know where the majority of people will be flying so we've introduced "Club Sunday".

On the 1st Sunday of every month we will nominate one of our sites as the Club Sunday field where you can come and meet other members to get to know each other and fly in a more sociable atmosphere.

The 1st Club Sunday is at Rotherfield on 4th March 2012.

Come along and meet your fellow flyers. In April we will meet at Berwick and Penshurst will be in May. We will then rotate! Check the left hand pane on this page to see where we are flying next. For more details see the events page.
